Tasty Talks @ the Free Library: David Sax, Jonathan Safran Foer, & More!

For four of the presenters in the Author Events series at the Free Library of Philadelphia, food is on the brain. A journalist, novelist, professional chef, and blog phenom each deal with the topic of food from a different personal perspective, showcasing the myriad impacts food has on our lives.

In Save the Deli, David Sax looks at Jewish culture and heritage through the lens of the Jewish deli. Along the way, he meets many interesting characters within the deli world and eats just about as many sandwiches.

Jonathan Safran Foer’s new book, Eating Animals, dissects the ways we rationalize our own carnivorous eating habits and the impact of the food industry. Foer, the author of Everything is Illuminated and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, is one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to see what he does with this personal and politicized topic.

Italian chef Lidia Bastianich presents her new cookbook, Lidia Cooks from the Heart of Italy.

Julie Powell (yes, the Julie of Julie and Julia fame) returns with her second book, Cleaving: A Story of Marriage, Meat and Obsession. Another memoir, Powell opens up about her life post-Internet stardom and the impact her newfound fame had on her marriage.
