Today, Truman Capote is a celebrated American author, penning such works as In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But “celebrated” is hardly the best word to describe the literary community’s view of him during his lifetime.

Mauckingbird Theater Company’s upcoming production, TRU, looks at Capote’s life as a controversial gay author in the 70s after he was rejected by New York City intellectuals following the publication of a particularly racy chapter of his unfinished work, Answered Prayers.

Chris Faith portrays Capote in this one-man show, written by Jay Presson Allen with a healthy dose of the author’s own recollections and works. It runs from Jan. 8 through Jan. 31.

In tandem with TRU, Mauckingbird is also staging James Ijames’ The Threshing Floor, which delves into the life of another influential gay writer, James Baldwin. The Threshing Floor is also a one-man show, which will make connections and comparisons between the two shows pretty interesting. Why not go see both?
