Next Thursday, December 10th, Eastern State Penitentiary will kick off their 2009 Winter Adventure Tour season… with an enormous chunk of ice. And when I say enormous, I mean 1200 pounds.

At 11am, Peter Slavin of Fear No Ice, a local ice carving company, will begin carving his masterpiece; a 7 foot, 1200 pound ice sculpture featuring the iconic images of Eastern State Penn and its famous inmates. The piece will be entitled Frozen in Time, and will be on view for visitors throughout the weekend. Entrance to the ice sculpture performance is free with the cost of admission.

Eastern State Penitentiary’s Winter Adventure Tours are limited to 25 people, and include the usual highlights; a visit to the cellblocks, the center surveillance hub, Al Capone’s cell, and the Alfred W. Fleisher Memorial Synagogue. Tours run at 10am, Noon, 2pm, and 3pm Mondays through Fridays, and every half hour from 10am to 4pm on the weekends.

Looking forward to seeing some photographs of the sculpture when it’s done!
