We all know that milk does our bodies good and that, while at the grocery store, one should always stop in front of the dairy case and ask, “Got Milk?” Now the California milk producers* are taking their milk promotion show on the road and will be landing in Philly tomorrow (Friday), January 15th, to offer milk tastings from local dairies and to give away gallons of milk.

They’ll be in the Center Court at Reading Terminal Market from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. tomorrow. Swing by, have a taste and pick up a fresh gallon of milk.

Fifty Years of Printmaking: Exhibition Opening @ Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

Outside the Magic Gardens

Outside the Magic Gardens

Tomorrow, January 15th, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens launches their new exhibit, Fifty Years of Printmaking: Works on Paper by Isaiah Zagar. Hosted in conjunction with the 2010 Philagrafika festival, the exhibit will be on display Friday through March 5th, 2010.

Now, you might only connect Zagar’s name to his gorgeous mosaics that dot South Street (as well as that one in Seafood Unlimited), but throughout his career, he’s also produced many etchings, woodcuts, and these special, featured prints. The prints on display at the Gardens will tell the story of Zagar’s life, from his time as a young artist in NYC to his travels in Peru and India.

Zagar will be present at the Gardens for the opening reception tomorrow from 6pm to 9pm, giving a talk about his works. Other events include a book-making workshop at the Free Library on January 21st and a magazine-making workshop on February 3rd.

This Saturday, the two popular boutiques are joining forces for their semi-annual warehouse sale. From 10am until 7pm, the SugarHabit pop-up shop will appear in Rittenhouse Square, adjacent to Parc, right on 18th and Locust.

Shoppers will have the opportunity to pick through over 75 contemporary designers, and save 50 to 90% off most items. This includes vintage wear, accessories, and select menswear. Now you can see why SugarHabit won Best of Philly’s 2009 pick for Mark-Your-Calendar sales.

2010 Resolutions in Philly: Learn to Cook

It’s so hard to resist the allure of a fresh, new year. A blank calendar has so much promise and possibility, that nearly anything seems possible, if only you put your mind to it. And so, we resolve ourselves to goals, changes and the pursuit of knowledge and skills.

But making a resolution and taking action on it are two very, very different things and it’s far too easy to get lost in the gap between the two. We here at uwishunu want to help you find ways to act on those goals, so over the next week or so, we’re going to feature some common resolutions and the ways you can work towards them right here in Philadelphia.

Today, we’re hoping to help those of you out who have determined that 2010 is the year you’re going to learn to cook. Whether you’re a beginner who doesn’t know a saute pan from a Dutch oven, or someone who’s looking to improve their knife skills in order to make the perfect mire poix, we’ve got the classes you crave.

Located in Reading Terminal, La Cucina at the Market is a great place to take a class or two. They offer standalone classes like Thai Dinner Party and the all-important Super Bowl Party (just in case you’re weary of the same old chips and dips) and well and multi-part classes like Hands-On Fresh Pasta.

For cooking classes with a touch of upscale shopping, check out the rotation calendar of classes that Foster’s Homewares always has on offer. They have a series called Intensive Hands-On Technique as well as a regular Knife Skills Class, both of which are great for able cooks who want to broaden their knowledge base. You can also learn to make your own condiments or marmalade through Foster’s.

More cooking class options are after the jump…

Saturday: First Farmer’s Market @ the Piazza in Northern Liberties

Here on Uwishunu, our bloggers love writing about Philadelphia’s farmers markets. Especially Marisa. I mean, just look at her posts on the Saturday markets in Fitler and Rittenhouse Square, Kensington’s Greensgrow Farm, and the market in Headhouse Square. Her photographs never fail to make me hungry.

Well, now there’s another farmers market for us to swoon over, opening at the Piazza at Schmidt’s in Northern Liberties this Saturday.

With over twenty vendors, including Birchrun Hill Farm, Weavers Way Farm, Betty’s Tasty Buttons, and Stargazers Vineyards delivering local, sustainably grown food, this looks to be a great addition to the Philadelphia farmers market scene.

I’ve placed the full list of vendors after the jump. Have a look, and be sure to stop by this Saturday.

Robert Smith’s Wood & Music Lab in El Centro de Oro

bird-plaque

When thinking of the perfect gift, whether it’s for a birthday or anniversary, I usually take the extra step. I don’t like getting the cliche chocolates, cards, or flowers. Robert Smith’s Wood & Music Lab is one of my favorite places to score unique, handmade gifts.

Nestled in the new business & visitor center in El Centro de Oro, Smith has a distinctive approach to his hobby. He carves and paints onto wood… using your photographs and pictures! Smith and his team can create wall plaques from your portrait, make custom address plates, canes, staffs and pretty much anything you request. Their specialty is carving images on wooden congas.

If you walk around the area, you might notice some of his work in the trees. One of my favorites is the tree with Central and South American flags carved right on it by Taller Puertorriqueño. Smith started his artwork 6 years ago on Dauphin Street but soon moved to the Latino corridor. If you don’t need something custom-made, you can check out some of the already carved plaques in the store; they’re pretty amazing. As an added bonus, ask about their music lessons!

His store located in the heart of El Centro de Oro is open 6 days a week Monday through Saturday, 1p.m. – 6 p.m.

18th Annual Junior Jazz Festival @ the Please Touch Museum

Please Touch Museum's Hamilton Hall, soon to be Jazz Hall!

Please Touch Museum's Hamilton Hall, soon to be Jazz Hall!

Proclaiming that Philadelphia is a great city for jazz… well, it feels like a bit of an understatement. Plenty of jazz legends called Philadelphia home, and you can catch a lot of modern, local jazz greats at places like the Clef Club, Chris’ Jazz Cafe, and Ortlieb’s Jazzhaus.

So it only makes sense that our city hosts events like the West Oak Lane Jazz & Arts Festival and the upcoming, month-long Junior Jazz Fest at the Please Touch Museum, to celebrate our city’s rich jazz history.

The 18th annual Junior Jazz Festival, the only event in the area that helps introduce young kids to the joys of jazz, kicks off at the end of the month, on Sunday, January 31st. The month-long festival will transform the Please Touch Museum into a giant, kid-friendly jazz club, full of live music, educational activities, and more.

A number of kid-friendly musicians are taking the stage at the Museum’s playhouse each weekend during the festival, with all performances free with museum admission.
