Oyster House's Shrimp & Crawfish Boil

As Center City professionals sip after-work cocktails and carefully slurp down “buck-a-shuck” oysters at 15th and Sansom’s Oyster House, it’s a lot of fun to tear the heads off crawfish and eat jumbo shrimp with your fingers.

And that’s exactly what you get to do with Oyster House’s Shrimp and Crawfish Boil, the restaurant’s new Tuesday dinner special. Oyster House promises that boiling the shellfish in their shells gives them a more intense flavor, and that’s definitely true.

Large kielbasi pieces add another kick of salt and flavor, and huge chunks of potatoes, onions and lemon peel complete the southern-inspired feel of the dish. The crawfish pack a very small amount of southern heat that washes down well with a Stoudt’s Gold or other beer from their capable draught list.

The walls of Oyster House are covered with a wide variety of oyster plates — so many in fact that you almost feel bad ordering anything else. But the restaurant has an extensive seafood menu that goes well beyond the raw bar — and the Shrimp and Crawfish Boil is a good example of that.

A delicious and creative step up from fish & chips (their previous Tuesday evening special), it’s a good way to take in a generous portion of seafood if you’re craving crawfish or as a Tuesday tradition — though a quick sampling of the raw bar before the main course wouldn’t be the worst idea either.
