Theater Exile Presents: Shining City

shining-city-poster

Theatre Exile, one of the city’s most exciting theater companies, is wrapping up its 13th season with Conor McPherson’s Shining City.

The company’s motto may be “dependably unpredictable,” but there’s no arguing that their work is dependably stellar as well. They’re dedicated to producing plays that engage the imagination while still being gritty and often painfully real. Shining City seems perfectly suited to that purpose.

The play premiered a few years ago in New York to rave reviews and Tony nominations. Irish McPherson has been recognized as one the current generation’s finest playwrights (you may have heard of his best-known works The Seafarer and The Weir).

Shining City centers on two men in a therapist’s office – the doctor and the patient. The patient feels responsible for his wife’s accidental death, and is being haunted by visions of her. The doctor has had a bumpy past as well, leaving both the Church and his new family, and is plagued by his own ghosts.

It’s a hauntingly beautiful play (metaphorically this time!) told by a master storyteller. And it stars two of Philly’s most-loved veteran actors, Barrymore winners Scott Greer and William Zielinski.

Make sure to get a solid dose of quality theatre before the season draws to a close – this production should be on every theatre fan’s calendar.
