Local Eats: Walnut Hill Community Farm

The shed at Walnut Hill Community Farm (all photos by M. McClellan)

This spring, the Walnut Hill Community Farm (and community garden) opened up on a plot of land that had been previously used by Septa for the El construction in West Philadelphia. And what an amazing transformation the garden planners have wrought. In place of the mud and machinery, you’ll now find a tranquil and verdant space that is bursting with edible goodness.

The farm is a partnership between The Enterprise Center CDC and the Walnut Hill Grower’s Cooperative, and is funded by the PHS City Harvest Community Grower’s Alliance grant. The farm is run by a collective of West Philadelphia youth who cooperatively farm and sell their produce at the Clark Park Farmer’s Market and at Milk and Honey Market.
