Terror Behind the Walls at Eastern State Penitentiary (Photo courtesy ESP)
The Philadelphia-region is one of the most historic regions in the country, which probably means it is also one of the most haunted places in the country.
And this year there are countless ways to experience the frights of Halloween in Philadelphia.
Of course, there’s Terror Behind The Walls at the historic Eastern State Penitentiary, but there’s also hayrides, parties, festivals and a lot more.
Check out a few of our top Halloween picks to make your hair stand on end.
Terrifying Tours & Haunted Houses:
• While frightening anytime of the year, Eastern State Penitentiary becomes downright terrifying during the Terror Behind the Walls, rated the “#1 Haunted House in America” by AOL City Guide. Hollywood-quality sets, 200 actors, custom-designed props, animatronics and digital sound effects fill the abandoned — and reportedly haunted — National Historic Landmark.
New this year, the “ESP After Dark VIP Tour,” gives guests a rare nighttime view of the cellblocks followed by Terror Behind the Walls. Through November 6.
• Bucks County’s spookiest ghouls and goblins surprise and startle those who dare to ride the Original Haunted Hayride deep into the woods, walk the dark maze of the Valley of Fear and sneak around two terrifying haunted houses. Through October 31 (select nights).
• There’s no escaping the fear at the horrifically haunted Bates Motel at Arasapha Farm, rated one of America’s scariest haunts by the Travel Channel. If the mayhem and terror inside aren’t enough, a heart-pounding hayride and haunted corn maze with lurking zombies and creatures will do the trick. Through October 31.
There’s plenty more scares below, including a truly “haunted” house, a ghostly dinner and a tour through the city’s most supernatural spots.

The new art installation will be located on the Schuylkill Banks, between Market and Chestnut Streets.

If you notice a few strange glowing orbs along the Schuylkill River this weekend, have no fear — it’s not an invasion of glowing jellyfish. Rather it’s Light Drift, an interactive, riverfront public art installation and experience that is part of Design Philadelphia.
For three nights only — this Friday, Saturday & Sunday — from dusk until dawn each night, visitors can interact with 100 vacuum-formed, non-toxic, recyclable orbs.
The orbs, located both on land and floating in the river, communicate with each other using sensors and radio signals.
As viewers engage and occupy the orbs along the park, the grid of lights in the water becomes an index of the activities on land. Multiple viewers can even create “intersections of linear patterns,” encouraging viewers to “play” with each other.
The interactivity of the orbs is designed to bring the people together by providing gathering spaces for watching the river turn into a flickering constellation, creating new connections on the river’s edge.
Light Drift is the brainchild of installation artist J. Meejin Yoon of MY Studio in Boston, Massachusetts. It’s presented by the Mural Arts Program in partnership with Fairmount Park, Schuylkill River Development Corporation and Philadelphia Water Department.
The Opening Reception for Light Drift will be held on Friday, October 15, 6:30 pm on the Schuylkill Banks between Market & Chestnut Streets.

Three courses of Amada's greatest hits.
After five years and 24,000 pounds of Serrano ham (that’s a lot of pork), Iron Chef Jose Garces’ is celebrating the fifth anniversary of Amada, his acclaimed tapas bar and restaurant in Old City.
Throughout the month of October, diners can indulge in the Five Years La Mesa de Jose Tasting Menu, a collection of Amada’s greatest hits, selections from Chef Garces’ first cookbook, Latin Evolution, and creations that helped him capture the title of Iron Chef.
For $65 per person, you get a glass of Amada’s signature sangria (in white or red) and three courses packed with delicious cuisine.
Feast on old favorites, like Pulpo Gallego, Spanish octopus with smoked paprika; the Amada Empanada, a spinach and Manchego cheese-stuffed plantain pastry that has been on the menu since Amada opened; and Piquillos Rellenos, incredible crab-stuffed peppers with smoked paprika aoli.
You can also discover why Garces conquered Iron Chef America with the Ensalada de Jamon, a micro arugula and spinach salad with smoked bacon wrapped in jamon and served with unbelievably delicious blue cheese croquettes (cheese puffs from heaven).
Below, check out the full tasting menu as well as a few teaser photos.
