Bambi Gallery at the Piazza at Schmidt’s in Northern Liberties is hosting “Meat America,” January 6th to 30th, an exhibit by Fishtown photographer Dominic Episcopo featuring carefully chosen cuts of raw meat butchered, sculpted and tweaked to become his muse.
The meat medium celebrates America’s appetite for “decadent and iconoclastic deliciousness.” Episcopo began this work in 2008 with the “United Steaks of America.”
The project in its current form includes every state, historical portraits like of Ben Franklin and Elvis, and text.
Episcopo is now officially recognized by the USDA as a certified “meatographer.” His work has also been purchased by the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Fun fact: Episcopo cooked and ate every piece of meat he photographed, in his Fishtown home kitchen.
The exhibit’s opening reception takes place January 7th, 6 to 10 p.m.
