Beginning in May, Chef Jose Garces’ gourmet market-cafe Garces Trading Company will offer pre-packed picnics, just in time for the alfresco dining season.
There are three selections to choose from:
• Happy Hollow for two: Named for the city’s first playground, this snack-friendly picnic comes with Rioja salami, Bianco Sardo cheese, house-made mustard, fig-and-cherry marmalade, fresh apple, fig crackers, macaroons, a large Fiji still water, jute bag, napkins and plastic knives ($35).
• Boathouse Row for two: A heartier choice, named for the iconic stretch of Kelly Drive, this option is served with country pate, duck rillette, Sungold tomato salad featuring house-made mozzarella, a sliced, house-baked sourdough bread boule, mixed cured olives, assorted chocolates, a large bottle of Perrier sparkling water, jute bag, napkins, paper plates and plastic cutlery ($45).
• Belmont Plateau for two to four: Decadence in picnic form. It’s named for one of the city’s top spots for outdoor grilling, located in in Fairmount Park. It includes Agro Dulce ribs, mortadella hot dogs, pain-au-lait buns, potato salad, house-made potato chips, house-made mustard, macaroons, four ice-cold seasonal beers, jute bag, napkins, paper plates and plastic cutlery ($75).
Each picnic comes with wine suggestions that can be purchased at the restaurant’s on-site PLCB wine store. Plus, picnics can be custom designed for up to 20 guests and will be available throughout the summer. Picnics To-Go will be available for walk-in customers, but to ensure a basket, you can also place an order by calling the café 24 hours in advance, at (215) 574-1099.
Happy spring!
