National Bike To Work Day Is Friday, May 20; Participate In The 2011 Commuter Challenge

Whether you're a competitive rider or a newbie, participating in National Bike To Work Day and the Commuter Challenge will be fun. (Photo by M. Kennedy for GPTMC)

May is National Bike Month and the highlight of the month is National Bike to Work Day on May 20. So dust off your old ten-speed, affix a basket to the handle bars — don’t worry it’s cool to have a basket now — and trade horsepower for pedal power.

Before you hit the streets, check out the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia’s resources on bike shops, bike safety and tips on commuting. You can also download maps of the area’s bike routes.

Also consider signing up for the coalition’s 2011 Commuter Challenge starting May 20 and running all summer. Get a team from your office to commit to biking or walking to work, log your miles every day, and compete against other companies of similar size. The winner will be announced at the end of August.

More good news for bikers, that we shared Friday: Mayor Nutter has announced that the city will be adding two critical new bike lanes to Center City in June — a southbound lane to 10th Street and a northbound lane to 13th Street.

Avoid traffic and parkway tolls, get some sun and exercise, and do some good for the city’s smog factor along the way.

Any chance the first leg of the Kelly Drive path (from Ridge to Calumet) will be reopened by then? It would sure feel a lot safer making my way in from the ‘yunk
