If you missed the very cool 12 Monkeys screening at Eastern State Penitentiary, you are not going to want to miss this.
The Philadelphia Film Society is hosting a free screening of the awesome, iconic, shot-in-Philadelphia movie, The Sixth Sense, in Rittenhouse Square next Saturday night.
At sundown, which will be around 8:30 p.m., the lawn closest to the intersection of 18th & Walnut will become an outdoor movie theater for a free showing of M. Night Shyamalan’s classic film that was set and almost entirely shot in Philadelphia.
Specific Philly locations seen in the film include St Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church on 4th Street, where Haley Joel Osment’s Cole retreated in fear; the former Striped Bass on Walnut Street, now Butcher & Singer, where Bruce Willis’s Malcolm Crowe dined with his wife; and 2302 St Alban’s Place, where Cole lived with his mother.
The event is jointly presented by the Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) and the Friends of Rittenhouse Square. As such, it is preceded by the awesome all-day block party on 18th Street from Locust to Walnut that we mentioned earlier.
The street will be transformed from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. into an outdoor café with expanded outdoor seating from the big three neighboring restaurants, Parc, Rouge and Devon. A portion of the day’s sales will be donated to the Friends, directly helping maintain one of Philadelphia’s most popular parks.
Make a full day and night out of it at Rittenhouse Square. Enjoy park-side cocktails and snacks, then come nightfall, pack a blanket and prepare to relive a classic Philadelphia film in one of Philadelphia’s most beautiful parks.
TIP: If you want to picnic, arrive early(!!) so you can grab a good spot. This event is going to be popular.
And don’t forget the Saturday Rittenhouse Farmers Market will be in full swing as well along Walnut Street and a section of 18th, from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m.
All together, it’s shaping up to be an amazing day for Rittenhouse. We love to see Rittenhouse Square actively programming the park with great events that will draw even more people to one of Philadelphia’s best parks.
