This weekend, the Philadelphia Art Alliance is presenting an exciting nontraditional exhibit called Let Me Tell You About A Dream I Had by the Miss Rockaway Armada artistic group.

Starting in July, the talented artists that comprise Miss Rockaway Armada began collecting scraps and salvaged materials throughout Philadelphia. They used this “junk” to build seven sculptural floats. Now that the floats are finished, the flotilla will journey from Bartram Gardens, with musical and theatrical performances along the way, to the Walnut Street Dock from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on August 20 and 21.

The river show will feature live performances from the junk boats including art, music, dance, film screenings, shadow puppet-theater and more. Meet the members of the Miss Rockaway Armada for their “Tiny Portraits Craft Picnic” which will take place before the performances from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday at the Walnut Street Docks.

If you can’t make it to the river banks this weekend, mark your calendars for September 3, when they will take the procession to University City (via Spruce Street, ending at Clark Park), or else for September 10 when the party moves to Kensington (via York and Front Streets, ending at FLUXSpace).

Plus, if you want to get an up-close look at these handmade and eco-friendly creations, the entire installation will be deconstructed into an exhibit at at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, starting on September 30, through January 3.

Check out the full schedule online.

This is a hugely innovative undertaking that not only spotlights the creativity of local artists but also the preeminence of sustainability in Philadelphia. We can’t wait to catch it live!
