UPDATE: Grammy and Tony Award winning star Audra McDonald concert, originally scheduled to kick off the Kimmel Center’s 10th Anniversary Season on October 1, is postponed to November 30.
The Kimmel Center’s 10th Anniversary Season officially kicks off with two dynamic powerhouse female vocalists taking the stage to showcase brand new works.
First up: Grammy-winning singer-songwriter k.d. lang with The Siss Boom Bang and special guest Teddy Thompson will perform a fusion of country rock and sweeping visceral melodies on September 29. The evening includes new works from their April 2011 release, Sing it Loud, and songs from throughout k.d. lang’s career.
Last time lang was on the Kimmel stage, she said, “It makes a girl want to sing all night.”
Then, reminiscent of the Kimmel Center’s inaugural season, opening weekend festivities also include a performance by four-time Tony winner Audra McDonald, an encore to her performance a decade ago.
She’ll be back on stage for the first time in four years since taking a hiatus for her role on Private Practice, and she’ll be performing her trademark medley of show tunes, classic movie songs and pieces written specially for her by leading contemporary composers.
It’s hard to believe it’s been ten (amazing) years since the Kimmel Center opened its doors. It’s going to be an exciting, star-studded season, showcasing Philadelphia’s legends and their connections to the Kimmel.
Check out everything to come. And below, we’ve included some fun quotes from headlining artists who’ve performed on the Kimmel Center stage.
