Today Is Park(ing) Day 2011, With More Than 20 Organizations Creating Temporary Mini-Parks All Over The City

Today, September 16, is National Park(ing) Day, a worldwide event that invites activists, artists, architects and other citizens to transform metered parking spaces into temporary pop-up public parks.
Park(ing) Day originated in 2005 in San Francisco by the art collective Rebar as a way to re-imagine the potential of the metered parking space. The event first occurred in Philadelphia in 2008; this year brings 20+ teams participating, from Center City to East Falls to North Philly to University City.
This interactive map will help you locate all of the parks around town (we’ve also included a version below). Also, be sure to follow @parkingdayphila on Twitter to get the latest updates on the day.
It’s an exciting collaboration among non-profit institutions, community development organizations, academic institutions and private companies, all in the name of a more sustainable Philadelphia.
