Our Guide To Black Friday, November 25: Best Bets For Local Shopping, Ride Free On SEPTA’s Santa Express And Suggestions For Where To Take Shopping Pit Stops

Philadelphia is getting festive for the holidays, and Black Friday is a great chance to enjoy the scenery as well as partake in excellent deals at local shops. (Photo by C. Gabello for GPTMC)

Here’s something you may not have known: the term “Black Friday” originated right here in the City of Brotherly Love.

It was dubbed in 1966 by our very own police department, who used this originally un-endearing term to describe the massive amounts of disruptive vehicle traffic the city experienced the day after Thanksgiving.

By 1975 the term “Black Friday” gained more popularity, and the definition of it became more commonly used to describe retailers turning profits, or when they’re “in the black.”

Either way, Black Friday is now traditionally known here and everywhere as the day that officially kicks off the holiday shopping season.

Here are a few of those sales and happenings around town that you may want to take note of for this Black Friday, November 25:

Bus Stop Boutique: Look for two happenings at Bus Stop on Black Friday. Running all day long, the “Black on Black Sale” offers customers 20% off all Autumn/Winter “black” styles. That evening, from 5:30-9 p.m., take part in the latter event, a collaborative holiday shopping party with Three Sirens Boutique. Receive free styling tips and learn different ways to mix and match the same holiday fashions from party to party without looking like a rerun. Enjoy “Little Black Dress” wine and nibbles while you shop and swap styling suggestions.

Kevin O’Brien Studio: This high-end textile studio, specializing in hand-painted scarves, decorative pillows and bedding, is great for unique and interesting holiday gifts that you won’t find anywhere else. Their Holiday Sample Sale Pop-Up shop, at which their handmade throws, pillows, scarves, bedding, stuffed animals and more will be up to 75% off retail price, starts on November 25 and goes through January 15. Stop by on Black Friday and receive a special discount.

Fire & Ice: Stop into Fire & Ice anytime on Black Friday to receive 20% off the entire store plus receive a free hand-blown glass ornament with a purchase of $100 or more. Shop before noon and receive a $25 gift card with a purchase of $75 or more.

Free People pop-up shop at South Moon Under: Receive 20% off everything, plus receive free gift-wrapping, at South Moon Under on Black Friday. Check out the Free People pop-up shop that will be inside South Moon Under until December 15.

Smak Parlour: Enjoy a champagne shopping spree and storewide sale, as everything from sequin tops, adorable gifts, accessories, little black dresses to jackets and more will be discounted. There will also be a Special Sample Sale, a $20 rack of one-of-a-kind pieces. Plus, get a beautiful silver or gold rose ring with purchase of $50 or more.

There’s much more below, including additional Black Friday sales, places to grab cocktails and snacks to take a load off and more.

Chefs Jose Garces And Marc Vetri Set To Battle In Their Annual Thanksgiving Day Football Game; We Compare The Chefs’ Turkey Recipes To See How They’ll Fare

In honor of the third annual Garces vs. Vetri Thanksgiving football game, we asked each chef for a turkey recipe so we could see how the chefs' Thanksgiving skills stack up off the field. (Left photo courtesy Garces Restaurant Group, right photo courtesy Marc Vetri)

The annual Thanksgiving Day football game between chefs Jose Garces and Marc Vetri is quickly becoming a big holiday tradition in the Philadelphia food world.

Each year, the two acclaimed chefs discard their chef whites for an Iron Chef battle of a different sort: a battle of the pigskin on the gridiron.

The chefs each recruit a team of players from their respective restaurants and put it all on the line: pride, bragging rights and, this year, a hefty check in the amount of $10,000 made out to the winning chef’s charity. Plus the amazing trophy.

This year’s game will be “Turkey Bowl III” and they’re kicking it up a notch: they’ve secured a stadium to host the game: Penn’s Franklin Field.

Meanwhile, Team Vetri called a team practice as early as September. But of course it’s in good spirits; Vetri also jokingly tweeted a call for ex-football players looking for restaurant jobs.

The rivalry currently stands at one win a piece; Team Vetri won the inaugural game in 2009 and Team Garces won last year’s showdown to even things up. Making the outcome of Turkey Bowl III even more hotly contested.

For some pre-game analysis, we’re taking a look at a turkey recipe from each chef. From Chef Jose Garces, a brined and deep fried Thanksgiving Turkey recipe. And from Chef Marc Vetri, an Italian twist on Thanksgiving with his Turkey Cutlet Milanese recipe.

We’re sharing the chef’s recipes side by side below for your enjoyment; feel free to whip up one or both for the holiday and decide for yourself which elite chef’s bird comes out on top.

So what do you think? Any predictions on whose cuisine, or rather whose team will reign supreme?

Recipes included in full, below.

Historic Philadelphia Breaks Ground On A New 100-Capacity Pavilion In Franklin Square, Making The Attraction A Year-Round Event Venue

Originally named North East Publick Square, the 7.5-acre green is one of five original squares that William Penn laid out in his original plan of the city in 1682. In honor if its 5th birthday, it's getting a great architectural addition. (Photo by G. Widman for GPTMC)

Earlier this week Historic Philadelphia, Inc. broke ground on a brand new all-season event space in Franklin Square, to be completed in the next few months.

In celebration of Franklin Square’s 5th Birthday this year, the party location in the Northwest corner of the square is undergoing a major transformation with the construction of a permanent structure.

Franklin Square, given its convenient location and gorgeous landscaping, fields constant requests for birthday parties, special events and get-togethers, and now will be able to host these events in any weather, all year long.

The new permanent structure will be 36 feet by 36 feet, in the space previously occupied by a 30×30 foot tent. The exterior will compliment SquareBurger, which was built in 2009, to be consistent in design and coloring.

The new building will be heated in the winter, air-conditioned in the summer, and have doors that can create an open-air space as weather permits. There will also be a variety of seating options from banquet to theater-style seating for parties and performances; capacity can be up to 100 people. Catering options available will include the award-winning SquareBurger/Stephen Starr Events.

To be among the first to book a party, meeting, performance or special event at the new structure in Franklin Square, send inquiries to Jessica Whiteman at (215) 629-5801×221 or jessica@historicphiladelphia.org.

Winter hours for Franklin Square are as follows: November 25-27: noon-5 p.m., November 29: 5-7 p.m., December 3-18, noon-5 p.m. Saturdays & Sundays, December 24: noon-5 p.m., December 26-30, noon-5 p.m. daily, December 31, noon-6 p.m., Janary 1-2, noon-5 p.m. daily. SquareBurger operates at the same hours as other attractions on these dates.

Check out a sketch, below, of what the pavilion will look like.

Sneak Peek: Vedge, The New American Restaurant From Horizons’ Kate Jacoby And Rich Landau, Debuts Tonight In Washington Square West

Vedge is a great addition to the vibrant Washington Square West dining scene, bringing fresh fare and a flexible approach to dining to a beautiful historic space. (Photos by T. Scheid for GPTMC)

As of July 2, the extremely popular, award-winning upscale vegan spot Horizons officially closed its doors.

And as of tonight, Friday, November 18, at 5 p.m., Chef-Owners (and husband-wife team) Kate Jacoby and Rich Landau are opening the doors on their much-awaited new venture, Vedge.

It’s a more casual version of Horizons, with small-medium plates and a more flexible approach to dining (there’s a cozy cocktail lounge complete with fireplace and happy hour snack menu, in addition to a full bar and two dining rooms for the full sit-down experience).

The transplantation from South Street to the Washington Square West neighborhood will likely bring more foot traffic, and the space is absolutely gorgeous. Check out some highlights of Vedge for a sneak peek before the spot opens this evening:

The Decor

Vedge is located in a historic building (we’re talking 1895 historic) at 1221 Locust, formerly Deux Cheminees, an upscale French restaurant that closed in 2007. The stained glass on the windows is original, complementing the gorgeous wood floors and tables.

The light fixtures are all pieces of art in themselves, crafted in Tennessee, including a “spoondelier” (vintage silver-plated spoons crafted into a chandelier) and two hanging strips of lights taken from telephone tower bulbs.

The hot kitchen feeds out into what the chefs are calling their “Vegetable Bar,” where cold prep will be done, tables and stools adjacent so diners can watch the cooks in action.

Horizons benefited from great outdoor seating; Jacoby says they’ve discussed the possibility of opening up sidewalk seating along Camac Street next to the restaurant in the warm months.

The Food

Fresh, fresh and more fresh. The restaurant is an all-vegetable restaurant, sourced from Lancaster Farm Co-Op, Irwin Bros. Mushrooms and other local suppliers. There is some tofu and seitan on the menu, but the bulk of what’s on offer is strictly vegetables.

Vedge will feature a variety of small dishes that can be combined in twos or threes, tapas-style, for a meal (whereas Horizons took the more traditional entrée route).

Fun fact: Vedge is also serving a “Dirt List,” a rotating list of creatively prepared vegetables that you can order a la carte.

The idea behind the restaurant is to have open arms for meat-eaters and veg-heads alike. Jacoby assured us that diners should feel free to come in wearing a leather jacket; no angry vegan activists here.

The Drinks

There are 75 wines, 12 by the glass; all are from small production boutique wineries, many family-owned and -operated. The focus is on natural, unfiltered wines.

Beer-wise, there are six rotating on tap, and eight bottles. There are currently two local picks (from Yards and Stillwater). Craft cocktails reflect the seasons, and the bitters are made in-house! Everything beverage-wise is designed to completely complement the food at Vedge.

So: why the shift away from Horizons? Jacoby says, “We were ready for something new; we didn’t want it to become a dinosaur.”

Pressure’s on to live up to Horizons’ acclaim; VegNews named Horizons “Restaurant of the Year” soon after its debut, Philadelphia magazine routinely listed it in its “Top 50 Restaurants,” and the New York Times called it “one of Philadelphia’s best new restaurants.”

But our opinion? Jacoby and Landau won’t have any problems whatsoever. Make reservations right here.
