The annual TubaChristmas Celebration returns to the Kimmel Center’s Commonwealth Plaza for the 10th year in a row, next Saturday, December 17, at 1:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
Listeners will be treated to two festive concerts, both completely free.
TubaChristmas was conceived in 1974 as a tribute to the late artist/teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. The first TubaChristmas was conducted by the late Paul Lavalle in New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974.
The Kimmel Center’s version is a great way to enjoy the city’s rousing holiday spirit among other revelers, as more than 100 regional tuba, sousaphone and euphonium players join together to perform holiday classics. Musicians adorn their instruments with tinsel, mistletoe and other seasonal ornaments, making the event even more festive.
Musicians interested in performing (the cap is 100) must RSVP via email to Jay Krush at krushtuba@gmail.com. Indicate if you plan to register for Concert #1 or Concert #2 in your RSVP email; there is a $5 registration fee to perform.
Both concerts are an hour long; afterwards, enjoy colorful Peppermint Martinis, Snowflake Martinis, Pigs in a Blanke and Candy Cane Cocoa courtesy of Wolfgang Puck at the PECO Café.
