Mavis Smith: Hidden Realities, An Exhibition Of Egg Tempera Paintings, Now On View At The Michener Museum

Mavis Smith, 'Solace,' 2008.

Now through May 20, the Michener Museum in Doylestown has on display a lovely painting exhibition by Bucks County resident Mavis Smith.

Entitled Mavis Smith: Hidden Realities, the exhibit samples a range of Smith’s work, including both paintings and works on paper as well as figurative images, still lifes and her most recent images of twisted and convoluted tree branches.

Often working in the ancient craft of egg tempera, which was used by artists as diverse as Botticelli, Vermeer and Philly’s own Andrew Wyeth, she slowly builds up layer upon layer of translucent color.

In conjunction with the exhibit, Mavis Smith will present a gallery talk this Sunday, January 22 at 3 pm.

Then on Thursday, May 17 at 7 p.m, she will present a lecture and demonstration, Egg Tempera: Then and Now. Registration required; call (215) 340-9800.
