More than 25 million guests have visited Peddler's Village in the past five decades. Peddler’s Village, that charming shopping and dining mecca located in lovely Lahaska, is celebrating its 50th birthday this year.

There will be no shortage of celebrations and festivities throughout the year, including family events, contests, promotions and more.

It all starts with a Birthday Cake Recipe Contest, hosted by the Cock ‘n Bull, the flagship restaurant of Peddler’s Village.

The public is invited to submit personal cake recipes to be judged at the Cock ‘n Bull on January 21, beginning at 1:30 p.m. And if you don’t bake, don’t worry. You can participate in the difficult, yet delicious, task of judging the cake contest.

Here’s the really fun part: the winning cake will be available on the restaurant’s menu from February 14-December 31, 2012.

There are plenty of other exciting events planned throughout the year, including vintage photo contests, memorabilia displays, cupcake decorating contests, summer concerts, movie nights and a sidewalk sale. Some of the stand-out 50th Anniversary festivities include:

• Peddler’s Village Rube Goldberg Challenge: The challenge invites folks to design and build a machine that uses the most complex process to complete a simple task (inspired by the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Reuben Lucius Goldberg). Goldberg’s grandchildren and Philadelphia television personality Don Polec will be celebrity judges.

• 50 Weeks of Shopping: Peddler’s Village shops kick off 50 weeks of shopping in January, featuring unique merchandise and services and locally-made products with fun events and promotions.

• 50 Trees for 50 Years: Peddler’s Village will launch the multi-year program 50 Trees for 50 Years to honor Philadelphia’s horticultural heritage.
