Philadelphia residents and visitors will be the first to catch the award-winning and nationally touring Proof at Walnut Street Theatre’s Independence Studio on 3.

Proof revolves around Catherine, who sacrifices college to care for her ailing father, a mathematical genius/mad man — those seem to go hand-in-hand a lot.

When Catherine’s father passes away, she’s left with an anonymous math proof, plus a problem that’s beyond academia: Did she inherit her father’s genius, as well as his madness?

As she struggles with the answer, the audience joins her on the often funny and very familiar journey through genetics and family traits (both wanted and not), all while a heartwarming relationship between Catherine and her father’s former student Hal blossoms.

Sound familiar? Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow played father and daughter in the big-screen version in 2005.

Proof marks the Walnut’s second national tour, a high honor for the nation’s most historic theater.

Theater-goers, be aware: this delightful play about family dynamics and legacy will leave you searching for proof of your parents in yourself.
