SquareBurger Opens In Franklin Square Today; Starr Bringing Back The Basics With Burgers, Double Burgers, Fries, Shakes And Custard

Get excited people: SquareBurger opens today in Franklin Square and Stephen Starr is upping his game this year, offering customers new options including double burgers, crinkle cut fries, shakes and custard. (Photos by R. Kennedy for GPTMC)

Last week, we alerted you to the fact that opening day for both Franklin Square and SquareBurger was imminent.

Well, that day is here. And we’re pretty excited about it.

Today, March 29, is the first day of Franklin Square’s 2012 season. That means all of the park’s awesome attractions — Philly-themed mini-golf, the Liberty Carousel, the playground, and the gorgeous central fountain — are open for business.

It also means it’s time to head down to SquareBurger, which also opens for the season at noon today, for the consumption of juicy burgers, crispy fries and the famous Cake Shake.

And big news this year: SquareBurger has stepped up their game with a few key new menu offerings.

There is the crucial addition of a Black & White milkshake, made with vanilla and chocolate ice cream with whipped cream. Also, the popular Shake-of-the-Month is back this year, with Orange Creamsicle kicking it off in April.

And a word to the wise: don’t sleep on the Philly Dog, a all-beef hot dog wrapped in kosher salami, onion, cherry peppers, plum tomatoes and mustard on a toasted potato bun.

The big news, however, is that there’s now officially a signature “SquareBurger” on the menu; although it’s pretty much the classic cheeseburger from previous years. It comes with American cheese, chopped pickles, diced onions, ketchup and mustard on a beautifully toasted potato bun.

The really big new menu addition this year is that you can order a “Single SquareBurger” (for $4.50) or a “Double SquareBurger,” the latter boasting two patties (for $6.50). Same goes for the classic cheeseburger and classic burger; both are available in the single or double variety.

Also new this year, the fries are crinkle cut… And the ice cream has been replaced by frozen custard…

Hmm, sounds like someone heard the news about a certain other burger shack coming to town, and adjusted their menu accordingly. But hey, who doesn’t love a good burger rivalry? Our stomachs are very much looking forward to it.

And the setting at Franklin Square is pretty hard to beat. It’s a great spot to enjoy a delicious meal in beautiful surroundings, at family-friendly prices.

Check out the full SquareBurger menu below. Hopefully, we’ll see you there. Every day. Through September 3.

Franklin Square is open March 29–May 24, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., daily; and May 25–September 3, 10 a.m.-9 p.m., daily and until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. SquareBurger opens at 11 a.m. and closes one hour before Franklin Square closes.
