The opening of Philadelphia’s first new hotel in the Historic District in years is now quickly approaching, with The Hotel Monaco Philadelphia now slated for a September debut on Independence Mall.
The project is an adaptive reuse development of Philadelphia’s historic Lafayette Building at the corner of 5th and Chestnut Streets in the heart of Historic Philadelphia. The conversion is dramatically transforming the 11-story office building located across from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall into a 268-room, four-star Hotel Monaco.
We first told you about the project back in October of 2010 and if you thought we were excited then, just wait, we have reached a whole new level of excitement now.
Not only will this brand new hotel property bring more than 260 awesome new guest rooms to Historic Philadelphia, it will also add a cool new restaurant to the ground floor of the hotel on 5th Street (more on that in a second…), AND, the real game-changer is going to be the sure-to-be-amazing new rooftop bar and lounge overlooking Independence Mall.
We’re serious. This new rooftop bar and lounge is going to be like nothing you’ve ever seen before in Philadelphia. We included it in our Top 12 picks for 2012 for a reason. It’s going to be big and spacious, with more than 300 seats, both inside and outside, 11 stories above the city. And it will be open to local residents to take advantage of as much as visitors staying in the hotel. It’s going to be awesome.
And now the hotel is getting closer and closer to opening. Kimpton is targeting a September opening and here on Uwishunu we’re psyched to be able to give you an exclusive first look inside the hotel at what the guest rooms are going to look like. As well as an exclusive sneak peek at the ground floor restaurant, The Red Owl Tavern.
This will be the second new Kimpton hotel property in Philadelphia, joining the very popular Hotel Palomar in Rittenhouse Square.
Below, we have more details on the hotel, plus your first look at the hotel’s restaurant, The Red Owl Tavern.
The hotel’s theme of “History in the Making” has a large design role in the overhaul of the stunning Empire and Greek revival building. The hotel’s interior design features millwork treatments that include periodic inspired wainscot, wall treatments, moldings and coffered ceilings in keeping with its historical surroundings. The design of the guest rooms and suites is contemporary and sophisticated, featuring a bold and vibrant color palette.
Key features of the new Hotel Monaco Philadelphia include:
• 268 guest rooms which will include 17 suites and 25 King Spa rooms.
• The Red Owl Tavern: a 130-seat chef-driven restaurant on the ground floor, that will offer a chef’s table, mezzanine seating and outdoor seating on 5th Street adjacent to Independence Mall.
• A 300-seat rooftop bar and lounge, open year around with full table service, heat lamps and two pavilions available for private events.
• Approximately 13,000 square feet of meeting and event space, including a 3,200-square-foot ballroom overlooking Independence Mall.
