Former Phillies outfielder Pat “The Bat” Burrell is coming home.
The current San Francisco Giant will end his MLB career where he started it: right here in Philadelphia. Burrell is going to sign a one-day contract with the Phillies to officially retire with the team during their Red Sox series at Citizens Bank Park May 18-20.
He’ll throw out the first pitch on May 19 and will also sign autographs in the Hall of Fame Club and appear on the telecast.
Burrell, a.k.a “Pat The Bat,” a.k.a. “The Machine,” was drafted No. 1 overall in 1998 by the Phillies. He ranks fourth in club history in home runs (251), fifth in walks (785), eight in RBIs (827) and ninth in extra-base hits (518).
When he left Philly, Burrell was the team’s longest-tenured player. And his seventh-inning double in Game 5 (Part II) turned into the winning run, as the Phils clinched the second World Series championship in franchise history. Since then, he’s played on the Rays and Giants, and had to call it quits last year thanks to severe foot and shoulder injuries.
So it’s only appropriate that he’d lay down his glove for good right here.
Welcome home, Pat.
