Mark your calendar and pack up your picnic basket for this Sunday, April 15, when Sakura Sunday, the centerpiece of the 2012 Subura Cherry Blossom Festival, comes to Fairmount Park for an action-packed day under the blossoms.
Sakura Sunday features a spring celebration of Japanese arts and culture for the whole family to enjoy.
On the main stage, Japan’s Tamagawa Taiko Drum & Dance group will perform traditional and original Japanese works featuring unique choreography and vibrant costumes.
Family-friendly activities will range from martial arts and swordcutting demonstrations to origami, calligraphy and tea ceremony workshops, as well as traditional stories told by Shofuso’s storytellers who will be riding around the grounds with their bicycle-mounted stage.
Plus, don’t miss the Prettiest Pet in Pink parade for cats and dogs, along with the Harajuku Fashion Show, which will feature eccentric designs from local students inspired by Tokyo’s bustling Harajuku district. And new this year, the Zenkaikon Cosplay Fashion Show will have anime fans showing off their crafting and costume skills as they transform into their favorite characters.
