Exploring the various ways that contemporary artists have developed ways to work alongside their peers and reach across generations, First Among Equals is on view at the Institute of Contemporary Art in University City now through August 12.
Contributions to the show include evocative performances, curatorial projects, publications and artworks that incorporate the work of collaborating artists in an effort to highlight how artists may negotiate, influence and constructively compete with one another in their joint artistic endeavors.
Altogether, First Among Equals resists the notion that collaboration must equal consensus, and instead highlights both overlapping networks of peers, as well as an inter-generational notion of community and influence.
Local participants include Bodega, Alex Da Corte, Extra Extra and Marginal Utility and Machete Group. Philadelphia artists are joined by Los Angeles participants including Kathryn Andrews, Mateo Tannatt and Wu Tsang.
A variety of programs and events are offered in conjunction with the exhibition, including a performance series with Bodega on June 23 at 2 p.m., in which four actors will rhythmically exchange roles of hyperbolic emotion within the artifice of two staged interactions.
