On June 27, The Philadelphia Orchestra will continue its annual summer musical tradition at the Mann Center for Performing Arts with three concerts celebrating classical music’s masters plus special guest Tony Award-winning actress and singer, Idina Menzel.
Here are the sweet-sounding details:
Wednesday, June 27, 8 p.m.: Beethoven’s 9th Symphony
Considered to be the world’s most famous classical composition, Beethoven’s 9th, along with Bach’s Double Concerto in D minor, will be performed on the Mann stage by The Philadelphia Orchestra. Joined by The Philadelphia Singers and soloists from the Academy of Vocal Arts, the orchestra will be conducted by Xian Zhang, the first woman to be named music director of the prestigious the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi.
Friday, June 29, 8 p.m.: Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with Fireworks
The Mann’s all-Tchaikovsky spectacular is a summer tradition and its most popular classical concert. Complete with the 1812 Overture and an awesome fireworks display, this concert features Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor with a dynamic young soloist from the Curtis Institute of Music, Alexander Ullman. It will also mark the Mann debut of the Orchestra’s new, young assistant conductor Cristian Macelaru.
Saturday, June 30, 8 p.m.: Idina Menzel, Barefoot at the Mann with The Philadelphia Orchestra
Tony Award-winning actress, singer and songwriter Idina Menzel (star of Broadway’s Wicked, the original stage production of Rent and FOX TV’s Glee), returns to the Mann to perform with The Philadelphia Orchestra. Menzel’s concert will be a collection of her personal favorites from the Broadway hits she’s starred in to the popular music she loves.
Tickets start at just $12.50 for lawn seats ($19.50 for the Idina Menzel concert). For more information on the Mann’s 2012 season, check out our coverage.
The orchestra will be back later in the summer for another three-concert series at the Mann, so if you miss out on this one, you can still catch them. Music to our ears.
