October in Philadelphia means falling leaves, pumpkins, candy corn and art. Lots and lots of creative and award-winning and locally made art.
During the entire month, the Mural Arts Program will be filling our city with celebrations of art in honor of Mural Arts Month. Events will include exhibitions, mural dedications, celebrity mural tours, murals and meals tours, book signings, lectures and much more.
Here’s our rundown of some of the biggest events –- many of which are free –- taking place throughout the month:
The Roots Mural Project Celebration
The Roots Mural Project honors the legacy of Philly’s own GRAMMY® Award-winning musical group, The Roots. It will be dedicated in spring 2013. On Saturday, October 27, from 1-3 p.m. head to the World Communications Charter School (512 S. Broad Street) for a celebration with painting, live music, giveaways and fun with the band’s founders, Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter.
Philly Painting Walking Tour & Artist Talk
Philly Painting is a project with world-renowned Dutch artists Jeroen Koolhaas and Dre Urhahn, known as Haas & Hahn, who’ve transformed the streetscape between the 2500 and 2800 blocks of Germantown Avenue with large-scale mural projects that swathe entire blocks in color. Join Mural Arts for a guided walking tour and artists’ talk on October 13 from 1-3 p.m. at the Philly Painting Storefront, 2600 Germantown Avenue (at Huntingdon Street).
Mural Arts Young Friends Happy Hour at Shake Shack
On October 15, 5-7 p.m., visit Shake Shack, sample the Center City Pretzel Concrete frozen custard dessert (a portion of the proceeds benefit the Mural Arts Program) and learn more about how to get involved with Mural Arts.
Peace is a Haiku Song: An Evening with Sonia Sanchez & Friends
Philadelphia’s poet laureate Sonia Sanchez leads a Mural Arts Month celebration of her Peace is a Haiku Song mural project. Singers, musicians and literary guests will perform in honor of her cultural contributions on Wednesday, October 17, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. outside in the City Hall Courtyard.
Mural Arts AppleFest
On October 27, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Mural Arts is teaming up with Whole Foods Market Callowhill to ring in the fall with a celebration of the season’s favorite treat: apples. The event will feature tastings of local apples and apple products, and fun arts activities including a live mural painting station.
