Red Bull Flugtag Returns To The Delaware River This Saturday, September 15 As 35 Teams Look To Defy Gravity With Their Human-Powered Flying Machines

In just a few days, Philadelphians and visitors will be packed along the Delaware River to see 35 teams from across the northeast take to the sky at Red Bull Flugtag Philadelphia.
In 2010, nearly 85,000 people watched as the skies above the Delaware swarmed with homemade flying machines. And they’ll be back, this Saturday, September 15.
Flugtag means “flying day” in German (it’s pronounced “floog-tahg”) but all these crafts ultimately splash into the waters below.

After being selected from more than 300 applicants, the chosen flyers will entertain the crowd as they launch their crafts off a 30-foot ramp into the Delaware River. Judges for the event include Preston and Steve from 93.3 WMMR-FM, DJ/Producer Rich Medina, Red Bull Athlete and Professional Lacrosse Player Paul Rabil and more.
Fifteen of those teams are made up of Philadelphia residents, so be sure to come out and support your fellow City of Brotherly Lovers.

Here are a few great examples:
• Beast of Amis: These guys can do more than just whip up a mean Italian meal. Chef Brad Spence and team will try their hand at soaring above the Delaware River. Apparently, as they told Eater, they’ve been doing weight training with the jiu-jitsu dojo and have signed on a NASA engineer as a project advisor. Look out, other flyers.
• New Kids On the Dock: Major League Baseball made them decapitate their favorite Philly mascot two years ago but they’re looking for redemption.
• Drink Philly: They love beer and bacon and they’re building a heck of a craft.
• Land Before Flight: They’re trying to prove that caveman did fly.
See all the teams here.
The flyers will be judged not only on their flight’s distance, but creativity and showmanship as well. This weekend will determine this year’s champions.
