As part of its Year of Dickens 2012 celebrations, the Free Library of Philadelphia continues the part with a “Drinking With Dickens” event at Nationals Mechanics this Monday, September 17.
Sure, Dickens’ birthday was back in February, but when you turn 200 and have contributed more than 1,000 characters through 15 works of fiction, that will give you license to have your birthday celebrated for an entire year.
On September 17, from 7-9 p.m., the Old City bar will feature drinks from Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol, as well as Mint Juleps (Dickens’ favorite American drink) and his personal punch recipe.
There will be recitals of drinking passages from Dickens’ novels as well as Victorian drinking songs lead by the library’s Dickens Ambassador Edward Pettit.
And because no birthday party would be complete (not one where alcohol is being served anyway) without a toast to the birthday boy, guests are encouraged to come prepared toast to Boz (Dickens’ pseudonym).
Stay tuned for more Dickens events to come, including a Dickens-themed pub crawl and a Literary Salon on Nicholas Nickleby, as the Year of Dickens closes out in the next few months.
