The Institute Of Contemporary Art Continues Its “Excursus” Series Of Artist Residences With “Ooga Booga,” A Satellite Version Of The Popular LA Store Opening Tonight, September 26

Philadelphians are no strangers to the fascinating finds vouchsafed through eager exploration of boutiques and consignment shops.

Starting tonight, September 26, at the Institute of Contemporary Art, curio collectors and owners of oddities can explore the indie hunt from a West Coast perspective.

Excursus III: Ooga Booga takes Wendy Yao’s popular LA store Ooga Booga – part treasure chest and part cultural experiment – and transports the free-styling spirit of the Pacific to a gallery near you.

Like the store itself, the opening night of the program tonight features a celebration of all things cultural: art, music and more. Along with meeting shop founder Wendy Yao, ICA visitors can catch a performance by Freakapuss, the cult band put together by Tronics frontman Zarjaz.

Guests can even unleash their inner artists with the Sumi Ink Club, a participatory drawing meetup based in LA that rejoices in ink – the blacker the better – and rejects ownership – everyone works on the same drawing, and all drawings belong to the public domain.

The Excursus series continues through December 16 with workshops, events and pop-up exhibitions. That’s plenty of time to make like a 90s John Cusack and put the cult back in culture.
