DesignPhiladelphia, the annual city-wide celebration honoring the historic role of design in the Philadelphia region while showcasing the creative innovation yet to come, returns October 10-14.

There are lots of exciting design-themed events to look forward to, from a Sustainable Streets Scavenger Hunt to an outdoor Trunk Show in Rittenhouse Square. We’ve got a list of some of the major happenings right here.

But no matter what your design interests are, the event you’ll want to make sure you’re a part of is the evening that kicks the whole festival off.

PopUp Place, the 2012 DesignPhiladelphia Festival kick-off party, is scheduled for Wednesday, October 10. The evening has two components: a reception starting at 5:30 p.m. at Provenance Architecturals (900 block of Canal Street), and a free street party outside on Canal Street, from 7:30–10 p.m.

The reception inside the 10,000 square-foot salvage warehouse includes food, signature cocktails from Art in the Age and the chance to mingle with the 2012 Design Champion Award winner. There will be a very cool pallet lounge by Bonzai Homes as well. Get tickets to the reception online.

When the benefit celebration rolls into the (free) PopUp Place Street Party, igniting the 900 block of cobblestone Canal Street, revelry includes vibrant outdoor projections by Matt Suib and Nadia Hironaka, live music by Dani Mari and Reverend TJ McGlinchey, So Re Fa fashion show produced by Arcadia Boutique, hands-on interactive architectural structure workshop and more.

Food trucks pulling up to the fest include Pitruco Pizza and Little Baby’s Ice Cream, with nearby Yards Brewery providing the sips.
