The Mural Arts Program’s Roots Mural Project has been working for more than a year now to put together plans for the special mural dedicated to the GRAMMY® award-winning band The Roots.
At last, the design by lead artist Ernel Martinez is ready to be unveiled, this Saturday, October 27, as part of Mural Arts Month 2012.
The Roots’ Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter will be at the celebration which honors the two men, especially, for their formation of the band. Dice Raw, Chill Moody and DJ Statik of the Ill Vibe Collective will all be performing during the event.
The choice of neighborhood is reflective of an area where the Roots first began to really make an impression on the city. You can hear all about that in Black Thought’s Philly 101 video.
Although the mural won’t be dedicated until 2013, the artistic team, known as Amber Art & Design featuring Philly 360° Creative Ambassador Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, includes artists Ernel Martinez, Charles Barbin, Willis “Nomo” Humphrey and Keir Johnston.
The artists will be in attendance, along with musicians and citizens of the public, for an afternoon honoring The Roots. In addition to some very likely meet-and-greets with the band, there will also be painting, live music, giveaways and food.
Visitors will even have a chance to work alongside Questlove and Black Thought in painting some of the mural panels. Be there.
