Philadelphia has long been known as a hoops haven, so it’s fitting that several of the country’s best college basketball teams call the area home. With so much talent in one place, rivalry naturally ensues, making the city’s historic Big Five match-ups some of the most exciting basketball played anywhere.
This month, Temple, Penn, LaSalle, Villanova, St Joe’s and Drexel all begin their quest for Philly hoops supremacy, as well as a birth in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Though none of the teams are currently ranked, the schools boast exciting and talented rosters and are looking forward to exceeding expectations.

December 5: Temple at Villanova
December 8: Villanova at Penn*
December 11: St. Joseph’s at Villanova
January 5: Penn at La Salle
January 19: Penn vs. St. Joseph’s*

February 16: St. Joseph’s vs. La Salle*
February 21: La Salle at Temple
The games taking place at The Palestra are marked with an asterisk because the historic venue is one of the best arenas in the country to watch basketball.
In addition to the exciting Big Five matchups, Philly hoops fans will have the chance see some of the country’s best teams. The Wells Fargo Center will be the home of several big games, including Villanova facing #2 ranked Louisville and #8 ranked Syracuse, and will host games during the opening weekend of the 2013 NCAA Tournament in March.
Also, Temple faces Duke at the Izod Center in North Jersey on December 8 as part of a national doubleheader. Owls fans are highly encouraged to make the trip and support the team as they attempt to upset the perennial powerhouse.
