December 20, 2012
Keep the holiday cheer going even after the Christmas presents have been opened and the Hanukkah candles have been snuffed out, with a fun Boxing Day event at a bar and restaurant.
Boxing Day is traditionally the day following Christmas Day, when servants and tradesmen would receive gifts from their superiors or employers, known as a “Christmas box.” Today, the holiday is better known as a bank or public holiday that occurs the first or second weekday after Christmas Day, depending on national laws.
Here in Philadelphia, if anything, it gives you the excuse to continue the holiday, er, merriment, thanks to drink specials and deals.
Here are three solid options for celebrating Boxing Day, Wednesday, December 26:
• Memphis Taproom: Memphis Taproom’s popular annual Boxing Day beer festival is back for 2012. Keep the Christmas cheer flowing the day after Christmas by sipping on the world’s finest holiday and seasonal brews all day long. Enjoy Sierra Nevada Celebration, Tröegs Mad Elf and Dupont Avec Les Bon Voeux, to name just a few. The event is also a benefit for three great causes; it’ll serve as a coat drive for HIAS Pennsylvania, a food drive for People’s Emergency Shelter and a fundraiser for Taste of the Nation Philadelphia. So, bring a gently-used winter coat, non-perishable food items and an appetite for tasty brews. Psst: Bring three cans of food or a winter coat and receive a $1 off your first beer.
• Pub and Kitchen: Pub and Kitchen will open at its regular brunch hour, 11 a.m., and remain open all day to celebrate Boxing Day right. The restaurant will be serving a special British-themed menu all day. Get ready to fill yourself up with fish and chips, bangers and mash, pork sandwiches and more. If you’re still full from a Christmas feast, pop in for their drink specials throughout the day.
• North Star Bar: Spend Boxing Day rocking out to some great musicians at North Star Bar. No better way to work off that Christmas ham. Join The Timid Roosevelts, Tamer Abouras, E. Joseph and Zachary Zeigler in performances that will get you head bobbing, but also benefits Philabundance. Tickets are available here.
