Based on Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning album of the same name, it’s a lavish production that taps into the heart and soul of a disaffected generation.
Set in post-9/11 America, the show tells the stories of three boyhood friends who yearn for something beyond their small suburban town. Each takes his own direction toward making a new and hopefully more meaningful life. Their respective paths add up to an emotional tale: American Idiot is full of potent references to pop culture and there’s a telling through-line relating to drug addiction.
Yet the real punch of this production is the charged music that propels the show from beginning to end. A live onstage band digs into the score with a raw visceral edge.
The show features punk-pop hits by Green Day, including Boulevard of Broken Dreams, 21 Guns, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Holiday and of course the titular album’s namesake track, American Idiot.
