In the entertaining world of the great playwright Oscar Wilde, circumstances are often are not quite what they seem, and that makes for much mischief in his masterpiece An Ideal Husband, opening at the Walnut Street Theatre on January 15.
Although written back in Victorian times, the play’s plot is a lot like the juicy fodder found in today’s gossip blogs. The husband of the play’s title, Sir Robert Chiltern, is a member of London’s House of Commons who enjoys a pristine reputation and the undying love of his adoring wife and sister.
However, it seems the honorable Robert’s financial fortune came about due to ill-gotten gains tied to an insider trading scheme. When a family nemesis threatens to reveal his dark secret the esteemed aristocrat’s career and happy marriage are soon at risk.
Will the man who turns out to be not quite as ideal as his public image succumb to blackmail, or will he do the right thing?
Well, this being an Oscar Wilde tale, you can count on plenty of witty repartee and intriguing plot twists to unspool before everything is settled.
