March 6, 2013
The Mt. Airy Art Garage (MAAG), a creative center for emerging and professional artists, is hosting a weekend celebration for women in the arts on International Women’s Day from March 8-10.
Since the early 1900’s, International Women’s Day has been annually observed and commemorated worldwide on March 8 to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. Yet the day also serves as a reminder of the economic, political and social strides made by women throughout history, as well as the challenges they still face.
This year MAAG will honor women’s artistic contributions to our society. The weekend will feature a wide array of local and citywide female artistic talent including, but not limited to, choirs, poets, spoken word artists, musicians, filmmakers, dancers, actors, painters, and media gurus.
The weekend includes three standout events:
Friday, March 8, 7-10 p.m.
Outloud! A Celebration of Female Voices: This kick-off celebration will focus on some of Philadelphia’s finest female-centric music and poetry. Featured performers include Anna Crusis Women’s Choir, TS Hawkins, Tamara Oakman, Sister Cities Girlchoir, Yolanda Wisher, DJ Teriyaki, Victoria Peurifoy, and more.
Saturday, March 9, 7-9 p.m.
Cocktail Reception: Stop by, have a drink and view a slideshow showcasing the “her-storical” achievements of female artists, all while celebrating the creator in you.
Sunday, March 10, 1-3 p.m.
Women in Media and The Art: A Conversation: This is an interactive conversation revolving around the past, present and future of women in the arts. All are encouraged to attend, share and question. Featured speakers include Michele Freeman, Sharon Katz, Nathea Lee, Janet Mason, Arleen Olshan, Nadine Patterson, and Jeanette Woods.
Tickets have a suggested donation of $10 per event or $25 for the entire weekend. Check out the Mt. Airy Art Garage website for more information.
