Philadelphia is one of the best burger cities in the country and the annual Burger Brawl competition is where the city's best burgers come together in one place for the public to decide who's #1. (Photos courtesy Burger Brawl)
Burgers are a big deal in Philadelphia, and Philadelphia restaurants take their burgers seriously. So seriously in fact that last year Philadelphia was ranked the #2 Burger City in the entire country by Travel + Leisure Magazine.
So with so many awesome burgers in Philadelphia, it would really great if there was one event that brought together all of the best burgers in the city to battle it out to be named the city’s best. And to which burger lovers could go to sample all of the city’s best burgers in one place…
Oh wait, there is such an event.
Now in its third year, the Philadelphia Burger Brawl does all of that and more, bringing together more than two dozen local chefs to compete for the ultimate burger crown while sharing their amazing burger prowess with one and all.
A fundraiser for public elementary schools, Burger Brawl was conceived by Rob and Maggie Wasserman of Rouge, 500 Degrees and The Saint James to help supply Meredith Elementary school with up-to-date technology and has since expanded its scope to fund the construction of computer labs at schools across the city.
The event will take place in the outdoor lot of the Fleisher Art Memorial in Bella Vista on Sunday, May 5, 3-6 p.m.
Some of the two dozen restaurants and chefs competing for the Judges’ and People’s Choice awards include Alla Spina, Barbuzzo, Butcher and Singer, Ela, Good Dog Bar, London Grill, Shake Shack, Silk City, South Philadelphia Tap Room, Percy Street Barbecue, The Corner and Kennett, among others. (A full list of competitors is below.)
They’ll be battling to join the likes of past winners David Wiederholt of The Capital Grille and Bobby Flay of Bobby’s Burger Palace in 2012, and Jen Carroll formerly of 10 Arts and Michael McNally of London Grill in 2011.
Philadelphia’s own Marc Summers will be MC-ing the event.
Coming with an empty stomach is strongly encouraged, as each burger-slinging chef is charged with serving up his or her best burger for all in attendance.
Tickets are $75 and are available online. That’s a pretty great deal considering, that gets you more than 20 of the city’s best burgers, beer from Dogfish Head, bourbon tastings from Jim Beam, Rita’s Water Ice… and it’s all for a good cause. So get your ticket while you still can.
