The Vendy Awards Return To Name The Top Street-Food Vendor In Philadelphia This Saturday, June 8, At Penn Treaty Park

Now in its third year, the Philadelphia Vendy Awards are set to return to Philly to determine this year’s top curbside chef this Saturday, June 8, at scenic Penn Treaty Park.

Since last year, street-food vending has only increased in popularity in Philadelphia. Need an example? Just look to the tens of thousands of hungry folks who attended last month’s Night Market Philadelphia and the ever-increasing crowds to come out to pick up food-truck fare at the The Porch at 30th Street Station.

After a public round of nominations, a group of 18 finalists are set to compete for the coveted Vendy Cup. From makers of decadent sweets to dishers of your go-to lunch, the finalists represent a delectable range of the mobile food vendors that hit the streets of Philadelphia.

In the “sweet” category, competitors include Cupcake Carnivale, Gozen, Jimmies, Lil’ Pop Shop (who won best dessert at the Vendys last year), Sugar Philly Truck and Sweet Box Cupcakes.

Finalists contending for the best “savory” title include Kami, Chewy’s, Chez Yasmine, Christis’ Falafel Truck, Foo Truck, King of Falafel, Lil’ Dan’s Gourmet, Mac Mart, Magic Carpet Foods, Poi Dog, The Cow & the Curd and the Tot Cart.

Judging this year’s Vendy Cup and dessert category winner are Andrew Gerson, a Philly native and executive chef for Brooklyn Brewery; Paul Kimport, chef and co-owner of Johnny Brenda’s and co-owner of Standard Tap; Emilio Mignucci, owner of Di Bruno Brothers; and finally, Lauren Purcell the editor-in-chief of Every Day with Rachael Ray.

Come out on Saturday to get your fill of food truck fare. Tickets to the event including all the food you can eat from the finalists, unlimited beer and a vote for the People’s Choice award.

Organized by The Street Vendor Project of the Urban Justice Center, the Vendys not only shine a light on some of Philadelphia’s most talented street-food chefs, but also serve as a fundraiser for The Food Trust, the region’s non-profit working to improve the health of children and adults while increasing access to good nutrition.

Tickets, $55, are tax-deductible and available online. We suggest you scoop them up as quickly as possible, as the food truck fest has a history of selling out.
