What’s better than taking in a concert by the world-renowned Philadelphia Orchestra? Catching the beautiful music for free.

On Tuesday, July 2, our city’s orchestra is set to impress new audiences during its annual free neighborhood concert at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing.

Just off of The Philadelphia Orchestra’s China residency and 40th-anniversary tour — during which our city’s orchestra became You Tube sensations — the assembly barely rests before bringing its music to the masses.

Associate Conductor Cristian Măcelaru is set to lead, with guest violinist Kristin Lee in a performance of Bernstein’s Overture to Candide; Barber’s Commando March; Vieuxtemps’s Souvenir d’Amérique: Variations on Yankee Doodle; Copland’s Billy the Kid Suite; Grofé’s On the Trail, from The Grand Canyon Suite; and ends with Tchaikovsky’s rousing and patriotic 1812 Overture.

Plus, in a pre-concert treat, the audience gets a warm-up at 5 p.m. as the orchestra welcomes students from the Philadelphia International Music Festival.

Now in its sixth year at Penn’s Landing, the orchestra’s neighborhood concerts series were revived in 2000 and aim to introduce the local community to one of the city’s most incredible ensembles.

You won’t want to miss this great performance with beautiful views of the waterfront during sunset.

After the concert, look to the skies for a landside fireworks display.

Can’t make it to Penn’s Landing? Other sweet spots for fireworks viewing on the Delaware River shore include Morgan’s Pier, Penn Treaty Park, Race Street Pier and Washington Avenue Green.

For a complete roundup of where to catch the best views, check out Visit Philly’s interactive map of where to watch fireworks over the Delaware River.

Later this summer, you can also see the orchestra alfresco at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts, the orchestra’s summer home.

The Penn’s Landing concert gets underway at 8 p.m. at the RiverStage at Penn’s Landing. We recommend arriving early, as crowds do gather for this free spectacular.
