This summer, The Awesome Fest’s 10-week film and music festival has brought the ’80s back to Philadelphia with a slew of performances and outdoor movie screenings at parks across the city.
Tonight, Friday, July 19, head out to the new pop-up park at Eakins Oval, The Oval, to catch one of the blockbuster highlights of the festival: a free concert by The English Beat featuring songs of General Public followed by a free screening of the classic film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Come out as early as 5 p.m. to beat the crowds (and the heat), and hang in the special extension of The Oval’s beer garden series, on tap through 9 p.m.
Sip a craft brew from Great Lakes Brewery or Sixpoint Brewery, or grab a good ol’ Yuengling, Coors Light or Blue Moon.
Food trucks will be on hand with eats, too. Look for Mucho Bueno, Chewys, Guerrilla Ultima, Mama’s Meatballs, Cupcake Carnivale and the Cherry Bomb Bus.
The opening act gets started at 7 p.m., with The English Beat taking the stage at 7:30 p.m., followed by the film screening at 9 p.m.
Despite the heat, crowds are expected to come out to this event at Philly’s new urban oasis, so bring your chairs, beach blankets and plenty of water — oh, and practice your best Ferris-like dance moves.
