Tomayto? Tomahto? No matter how you say it – or eat it – this natural treat is as dynamic as it is delicious. And this Saturday, tomato devotees are in luck as Linvilla Orchards in Media hosts its annual Tomato Festival to celebrate this magnificent fruit.
This fun-filled and educational event begins at 8 a.m. when visitors are invited to pick-their-own from the orchard’s vast array of tomato plants.
All day long, a variety of entertaining and informational programming will be geared toward tomato fans of all ages.
From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Linvilla’s beekeeper Warren Graham will be on hand to show off the orchard’s observational beehive, discuss bees and beekeeping, and showcase his locally produced honey.
At 10 a.m., farmer Norm Schultz will discuss the tomato-growing process and explain how and why the farm grows so many exciting varieties. And, of course, there’s no better way to fully understand the breadth of the tomato world than with a good old-fashioned tasting.
During the day, guests can experience the farm via hayrides, pony rides and train rides. Kids will love the face painting station, costumed characters and crowd-pleasing magician, while adults are sure to enjoy the on-site garden center and farmers’ market.
Attendees will also be treated to tunes from The Ultimates, who will perform live several times throughout the festival.
Note: This event was originally billed as a Tomato & Pear Festival, but unfortunately the pears are taking a bit longer than expected to ripen. However, peaches are ripe for the picking, and pears should be ready in the next couple of weeks.
