Explore the grounds, cells and passageways of Eastern State Penitentiary as the historic site opens its doors for its annual Winter Adventure Tours, running every day (with the exception of Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve) through March 14, 2014.
Winter visitors can choose to explore the penitentiary one of two ways — take an hour-long guided tour of sites like the center surveillance hub, Al Capone’s cell, the cellblocks and Death Row, or embark on the Voices of Eastern State audio tour featuring stories told by 28 former inmates and officers.
Weather permitting, both tours also include access to the Penitentiary’s winter hands-on history interactive experiences, learn how to unlock prison cells and hear stories of prisoners who scaled Eastern State’s 30-foot walls.
Guided tours run every other hour on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and every hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the weekend. Audio tours are available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day of the Winter Adventure Tour series.
Guests interested in attending the guided tour are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance, spots are known to fill up, especially on the weekend. Tickets are available online. Audio tour tickets are readily available at the door.
Tickets for the Winter Adventure Tours are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for children and students.
Take note, Eastern State Penitentiary is unheated, with the exception of only a few spots around the attraction, so dig out your trusty winter hat and gloves for the seasonal tours.
