The Grand Old Lady of Locust Street turns 157 years old this year, and The Philadelphia Orchestra has a stellar evening planned to celebrate.
A resplendent annual affair, the 157th Anniversary Concert and Ball returns to celebrate the historic Academy of Music — oldest known opera house continuously in use in the U.S. — on Saturday, January 25.
Following up last year’s blockbuster-of-a-guest Hugh Jackman, this year’s concert is set to welcome homegrown superstars Kevin and Michael Bacon as hosts, with Grammy Award-winning Philly-girl Jill Scott joining Robert Glasper and pianist Stewart Goodyear, and the orchestra’s music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin to lead the acclaimed ensemble in a magical musical event.
And, yup, you’re invited.
As a nod to the very first Academy Anniversary concert, during which Eugene Ormandy shared his podium with Danny Kaye, the evening promises the ultimate in popular and classical programming with everything from sweeping orchestral works to Broadway favorites.
This year, expect the Bacon brothers to charm as dapper hosts and Jill Scott to blow away the audience during the evening-length affair.
Concert-only tickets, starting at $200 and located in the amphitheater level, are now available.
If you’re feeling philanthropic — remember, the affair benefits the Academy of Music Restoration Fund and The Philadelphia Orchestra — tickets are also available for the full white-tie gala and concert, which includes dinner and dancing at the Hyatt at The Bellevue, an open house preceding the concert and a special performance by the Bacon Brothers in the ballroom at The Bellevue.
For those who want to make a weekend out of the grand affair, check out Visit Philly for stellar deals on staying over.
Concert and gala tickets are available online or by calling the Academy of Music Restoration Fund Office at 215-893-1978.
It’s going to be a truly unforgettable night in Philadelphia.
