Ready for another round of alfresco fun on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway? The Oval returns this week with a three-day open-air artisan market at Eakins Oval.
Following a hugely successful inaugural season in 2013, the open-air public space brings outdoor entertainment back to the Parkway this spring and summer, transforming an island of asphalt and surrounding lawns at 24th Street and the Parkway into an eight-acre fun zone.
This weekend, May 22-24, PHAIR at The Oval offers up the perfect kickoff to Memorial Day weekend with the chance to shop for locally made art and handmade goods in the great outdoors.
The festivities run from 5 to 9 p.m. on May 22 and 23, and noon to 7 p.m. on May 24, giving shoppers plenty of opportunity to make it out to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
Read on for our guide to the shopping, food and drink and more, and check out the complete schedule of events online.
The Vendors & Entertainment
From Thursday, May 22 through Saturday, May 24, more than 24 local artisans and vendors — all curated by the folks of PHAIR open-air market — set up shop for a free and open-to-the-public market.
Shoppers can look forward to a wide array of goods — think prints from Fishtown gallery The Art Dept., clothing from the Smak Parlour fashion truck, handblown glass, leather accessories, jewelry, and much more.

On Thursday and Friday, live music from DJ Apt One will keep the crowds grooving. Come Saturday, The Oval’s stage hosts a DJ, trumpeter Daud El-Bakara and Philadelphia’s own New Sound Brass Band.
Plus, on Saturday at noon, The Clay Studio’s Clay Animation Studio presents a hands-on workshop on how Claymation movies are made and allows folks to participate in creating a short stop-motion animation film.
The Food & Drink
In addition to shopping, marketgoers will find a solid lineup of food trucks each day of the festivities.
Each day of the market, a different lineup of around three trucks roll down to The Oval. Look for The Farm Truck, Mama’s Meatballs, Cow and the Curd, Lil’ Pop Shop, Sweetbox Cupcakes and more.
Plus, there will be a local “libations lounge” with drinks from the Victory Brewpub on Wheels (beer!) and Frescon Farms (hard cider and wine!) all three days of the festival.
Located within easy walking distance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Barnes Foundation, The Franklin Institute, Academy of Natural Sciences, the Free Library, the Rodin Museum and Sister Cities Park, The Oval is situated in what was a surface lot in front of the Museum of Art.
By public transportation, take SEPTA bus routes 2, 7, 32, 33 and 48. By far the easiest way to arrive at The Oval, though, is by foot or bicycle. There are crosswalks leading from the sidewalks of the Parkway, straight to the park and bike racks are on site.
Stay tuned for more on this super summertime attraction right here, too.
