Looking for a little distraction after the long work week? Well there’s no better way to let loose than hitting the dance floor with a DJ who isn’t afraid to keep you on the edge while manning the turntables. We’ve got the solution. Next Wednesday, talented UK-born Evian Christ will be spinning tracks guaranteed to get your pulse pounding to the beat at South Philly’s own Dolphin Tavern.
The young 24-year-old Christ, aka John Leary, hails from Ellesmere Port, a small, no-name industrial town in Cheshire, England. A town not known for producing buzzed-about electronic beatsmiths, Christ is certainly an anomaly.
In 2011, Leary put down some first-time tracks on YouTube during a two-week window in the Christmas holiday under the alias Evian Christ. Not long after, the search was on to discover the true identity of the artist producing these new, dark hip-hop instrumentals. With tracks like “Drip” and “None of Ya’ll Don’t Rap,” top music blogs craved to know the man behind the music.
Christ’s hip-hop mixes are not inspired by big-name DJ’s or the music played at well-known EDM clubs, but inspired by the R&B of the early 2000’s, his step-dad—a former trance DJ, and the artist Grouper, making his music unclassifiable and original.
In February 2012, Christ signed with well-known Tri-Angle Records, an NYC-based electronic label. He released his first free online mixtape of early music entitled, “Kings and Them,” and suddenly the music world was calling and the offers were pouring in. In the mix, one very influential person took interest: Kanye West. Before Christ knew it, he was sending West some new tracks on the fly and hopping over to West’s Paris studio to help produce and finish “I’m In It,” a track on the hip-hop opus “Yeezus.”
Having just signed with West’s new publishing house and creative agency DONDA, Christ is leaving Ellesmere Port behind for now. He’s headed to the Big Apple to work with big-name US DJs and has just released his much-anticipated EP, “Waterfall.”
With a well-established name on the electronic circuit, ties to hip-hop superstar Kanye West, and notable collaborations with hip-hop heavyweights like Rick Ross, Evian Christ is a must-see, must-hear artist!
K|Rex and Dutch E Germ are the openers.
