Wawa Welcome America Celebrations Kick Off With The Liberty Block Party At The Shops At Liberty Place This Saturday, June 28

The Liberty Block Party kicks off Wawa Welcome America this weekend with samplings from the city’s top local food trucks, restaurants and more. We hope the scene this weekend resembles other awesome food-truck street fairs like Night Market (shown). (Photo by D. Tavani for Visit Philadelphia)

Philadelphia, the 4th of July is only a week away! This weekend, the celebrations get underway with the kick-off party for Wawa Welcome America, the city-led Independence Day celebration.

As the birthplace of the nation, Philadelphia is home to many, many 4th of July events, but the Wawa Welcome America festivities have spearheaded local celebrations for more than 20 years, helping to establish Philly as one of the places to commemorate Independence Day.

This Saturday, June 28, the week-long Welcome America festivities begin with a day of live music, tons of tasty treats and more during the Liberty Block Party at and around The Shops at Liberty Place.

Rather than host the annual Taste of Philadelphia as in past years, the Welcome America crew will instead host this block party right in Center City.

Centered at The Shops at Liberty Place, the street will be shut down for the affair from noon to 10 p.m. to welcome festivalgoers with tons of food and entertainment.

More than a dozen vendors are set to peddle of some of Philadelphia’s finest fare. Look for such locally loved food trucks as Curbside Creamery Ice Cream, Bonjour Creperie, Samosa Deb and Sugar Philly Truck, in addition to offerings from Mama’s Meatballs, Pop-a-Nugget, Gigis & Big R and more. See below for a current list of food vendors.

Beyond the food, the block party will also host craft and fashion vendors, as well as two stages for live music. Performers will take to the stages all day long, but particularly watch for R&B group New Edition, who will be honored with a tribute performance curated by Charlie Mack and a nod from Mayor Michael Nutter.

Admission and all the entertainment at the block party are completely free. Just pay as you go for food and drink.

Remember, this is just the first of Philadelphia’s 4th of July events. Check back for more coverage of America’s birthday celebration soon!
