Best known for his 2004 Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning play Doubt: A Parable, playwright John Patrick Shanley debuted his latest work, Outside Mullingar, on Broadway last January to reviews that nearly equalled his much-lauded previous play.
Now, Shanley’s most recent work can be seen right here in Philadelphia, presented by Philadelphia Theatre Company at the Suzanne Roberts Theatre starting this Friday, November 28.
A look at two middle-aged misfits whose families are involved in a longtime feud, Outside Mullingar is set in rural Ireland and involves two battered souls living on neighboring farms who are single and edging toward 40.
When matters of inheritance arise, and a long simmering family feud erupts, the two find themselves in binds that may or may not tie them together.
It’s a warm-hearted tale that’s classic Shanley, a lyrical wordsmith who won not only the aforementioned Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award for Doubt, but also an Academy Award for the film Moonstruck.
Both a romantic comedy and a family drama, Outside Mullingar offers laughs as well as somber reflections on life and love. It’s also chock full of high-spirited colorful Irish banter that will keep your ear pricked up all the way through.
Tickets, $25, available online.
When: November 28-December 28
