Top Places To Do Outdoor Yoga In Philadelphia This Summer

More than 15 spots around town to practice yoga alfresco.

From Yoga on the Pier offered seven days a week to pop-up classes at awesome spots like Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, there are tons of yoga experiences to partake in this summer at locations all around town.

Choose to stretch it out on the grass, spread your mat beneath the beautiful Benjamin Franklin Bridge or even strike a pose on a paddle board atop the Schuylkill River. Note: most classes are BYOMat.

Below, we’ve got 17 (!) places to participate in an outdoor yoga class this summer.

Yoga on the Pier

Wake up to picturesque views of the Delaware River or calm your mind after a long day of work beneath the beautiful Benjamin Franklin Bridge during Yoga on the Pier, unfolding every single day at Race Street Pier at select morning and evening times. Classes invite those of all experience levels to roll out their mat on the pier and take part in an hour-long session.

Yoga on the Banks

On the grassy area near the new Schuylkill River Banks Boardwalk, Yoga on the Banks hosts 60 minute classes three times per week. Teachers vary per day but instruction is always geared for those of all levels. Come out and join to enjoy those warrior I's and II's overlooking a riverscape setting.

Yoga at the Market

New this year and curated by the same people who launched Yoga on the Banks, Yoga at the Market pairs the beautiful combination of farmer's market shopping with free yoga classes. Taking place at three farmer's market locations around the city (Clark Park, Dickinson Square and Schuylkill River Park), hour-long sessions will be hosted on select days through September. Classes take place at Clark Park on Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Dickinson Square on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and Schuylkill River Park on Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m.

Yoga at Lemon Hill

Now an official public park, Lemon Hill was once home to Henry Pratt, a prosperous Philadelphia merchant who built its existing mansion back in 1800 as a summer retreat. Today, the grounds invite you out for your own outdoor retreat during weekly classes held by yoga teachers from Yoga and Movement Sanctuary. Enjoy the 60-minute classes, and continue soaking in some fresh-air as you wander around the surrounding park.

Yoga at the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Take in scenes of the grand Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA) as you hang out in downward dog and then serene views of the Schuylkill River as you transition back into mountain pose during weekly Wednesday yoga classes in the museum's sculpture garden. Sessions kick off both at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. to accommodate varying work schedules and are led by instructors from Dhyana Yoga.

Yoga in the Garden at Front Street Cafe

Twilight Yoga at Race Street Pier

There's something majestic about doing yoga under a full moon outdoors, and the Twilight Yoga sessions at Race Street Pier are making that possible right here in Philadelphia. Held under the radiance of moon and the lights from the nearby Benjamin Franklin Bridge, the classes invite those of all levels to come out and join others in a moonlit flow.

Floating Yoga

If you're ready to put your yogi balance to the test, try taking your practice to the top of a paddle board on the Delaware River. "Floating Yoga" classes led by instructors from Aqua Vida right near Spruce Street Harbor Park invite you to utilize the extra challenge of the water to really get focused and deepen that mind-body connection. And don't forget your swimsuit – while classes go at a pace designed so that you won't fall in the river, you are guaranteed to get a little wet.

Rooftop yoga at Whole Foods South Street

Yoga at Franklin Square

In addition to the carousel, mini golf course and simply refreshing urban green space that it offers, Franklin Square is now hosting yoga classes, too. Led by instructors from Dhyana Yoga, the vinyasa classes invite you to come enjoy the park during the evening on Mondays or during the mornings on Saturdays as you awaken on your mat.

Yoga at Water Works

As part of the Pop Up Yoga Philly series, Water Works invites yogis of all experience levels to lay out their mats in front of the serene waters of the Schuylkill River at the area's outdoor pavilion. A large portion of the proceeds of the monthly classes will go to the maintenance of the Water Works and their educational classes.

Yoga at League Island

For the early-risers, South Philly's Nava Yoga Center is holding 6:30 a.m. classes alfresco at League Island. Wake up with the sun and move through a few sun salutations every Tuesday, rain or shine – in the event of bad weather, classes are moved into Nava’s studio.
