The Franklin Institute Debuts First-Of-Its-Kind Virtual Reality Experience

Explore the deep ocean, medical procedures and more at this brand-new immersive experience at The Franklin Institute...

This week, The Franklin Institute will become the first cultural organization in Philly to incorporate virtual reality (VR) into its exhibit space. On Tuesday night, the museum unveils the world’s most comprehensive, multi-tiered virtual reality initiative at a museum.

Fast Facts

  • The Franklin Institute debuts a virtual-reality experience on Tuesday night, October 25.
  • Guests can explore a virtual-reality content library with 360-degree videos from the bottom of the ocean, a video of a brain surgery and more.
  • Guests can also explore an innovative virtual-reality demonstration area.
  • Access to the virtual-reality experience is included in the price of general admission.

The museum will debut two different aspects of its brand-new virtual reality programming: an on-site virtual-reality demonstration space and a virtual-reality content library featuring impressive science-based imagery for use via new The Franklin Institute mobile app.

Thousands of Google Cardboards, which are a simple viewer to maximize the VR experience, will be given out to museum guests for free.

Virtual Reality Demonstration Space

As part of its new VR focus, The Franklin Institute opens one of the country’s first virtual-reality facilities in a museum. The virtual-reality demonstration space promises guests a fully immersive science-based experience that fills the entire room.

In addition to serving as a place for entertainment for guests, the demonstration space will also serve as a testing area for virtual-reality software created by local developers.

Three of the museum’s core exhibitions — The Giant Heart, Your Brain, and Space Command — will be home to virtual reality experiences of their own.

Virtual Reality Content Library and New Mobile App

For the first time ever, The Franklin Institute will debut a free mobile app that will be a major part of the museum’s new virtual reality experience. The app is available for download right here. The staff at The Franklin Institute carefully curated a selection of virtual reality images and videos that are available on the app. The images and videos are each part of one of the following categories — space, planet earth, human body, technology, physical sciences and history.

Perhaps the most exciting piece of virtual-reality content on the museum’s new app is riveting imagery like a 360-degree video from the bottom of the deep ocean, a tour of an actual space shuttle, a brain surgery and more.

The experience opens on Tuesday, October 25 at a free public launch event. Note that spaces for the launch are full, but those interested in attending can sign up for the waiting list.

Access to the virtual-reality experience at The Franklin Institute is included in the price of general admission to the museum. Be sure to check out this first-of-its-kind experience at our awesome local science museum.
